Swimming lesson prices in Toronto look inconsistent until you separate them by format. Once you do, they are fairly predictable — and the cheapest option per session is often not the cheapest way to reach a given skill.
What drives the price
- Group size — the single largest factor. Coach attention per swimmer is what you are buying.
- Coaching versus instruction — a certified coach following one swimmer's progression costs more than a rotating instructor delivering a fixed curriculum.
- Pool time — indoor pool availability in Toronto is scarce and priced accordingly, especially in fall and winter.
- Frequency — nearly every provider discounts higher frequency, so cost per lesson falls as sessions per week rise.
- Season — summer outdoor and private-pool arrangements are priced differently from the indoor season.
The formats, compared
| Format | Cost per session | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal group program | Lowest | Water safety and first levels |
| Swim club lesson block | Middle | Coached progression over a season |
| One-to-one technical coaching | Highest | Fixing a specific fault fast |
The table is deliberately relative rather than absolute. Municipal pricing changes by season and residency, and private rates vary by coach — quoting exact figures for providers other than our own would be guesswork.
Double Time Swim Club pricing
Lessons are sold as monthly blocks matching one, two or three sessions a week, or as a 2.5-month season package paid as one total:
| Block | Frequency | Price per month |
|---|---|---|
| 4 lessons a month | Once per week | $225 |
| 8 lessons a month | Twice per week | $325 |
| 12 lessons a month | Three times per week | $425 |
| Season — 2.5 months | Once per week | $500 |
| Season — 2.5 months | Twice per week | $750 |
| Season — 2.5 months | Three times per week | $1000 |
| Private lesson | One hour, one-to-one | $75–$100 |
Cost per lesson falls from $56.25 to $40.63 to $35.42 as frequency rises. The season package lowers it again at every frequency: $500, $750 and $1000 work out to $200, $300 and $400 a month against $225, $325 and $425 month to month — $62.50 less over the term, in exchange for paying up front. Every figure is before HST. A second sibling receives 5% off, a third sibling 10%, and new referrals 15% for that semester. Payment is currently made by Interac e-transfer.
Cost per lesson is the wrong measure
The useful measure is cost per unit of progress. A swimmer who attends a cheap group class weekly for two years without fixing their body position has spent a great deal of money on repetition. A swimmer who spends more per session and fixes the fault in a block has spent less overall.
Hidden costs to expect
- Goggles that actually fit — the most common reason a child refuses to put their face in.
- A swim cap for longer hair, required at many pools.
- Travel time, which is a real cost: a pool that is too far away produces missed lessons.
- Registration timing — the popular municipal slots go within minutes, and a missed window can cost a whole season.
