Who this is for

Is this the right program?

Every swimmer arrives from a different place. The first lesson is about finding that place honestly, then choosing the right next skill.

A child who has never swum before

Nervous in deep water, or has only ever been in a pool with a parent holding on. We begin with breath control, floating and comfort — no pressure to swim a length on day one.

A child who can swim a little

Can splash across the shallow end but has no reliable breathing, kick or arm pattern. We rebuild the fundamentals so the swimming holds together over distance.

A swimmer who has stalled

Finished a municipal level or two and stopped progressing. We identify the specific skill that is blocking the next step rather than repeating the level.

An adult starting from zero

Adults are welcome in the same beginner track. If you would rather train with adult-specific goals in mind, see Adult & Masters.

What you'll learn

The work, in order.

Fundamentals are taught in an order that holds up. Comfort and breathing come before propulsion, because a swimmer who cannot breathe calmly cannot learn a stroke.
01

Water confidence

  • Entering and exiting the pool safely and independently
  • Submerging, blowing bubbles and controlled exhalation underwater
  • Front and back floats, and recovering to a standing position
  • Comfort in water above standing depth
02

Body position and breathing

  • Streamlined horizontal position with a long, quiet body line
  • Rhythmic breathing rather than head-lifting and gasping
  • Kicking from the hip with relaxed ankles
  • Gliding — travelling further for the same effort
03

Stroke development

  • Front crawl: catch, pull, recovery and side breathing
  • Backstroke: steady rotation and a consistent arm pattern
  • Introduction to breaststroke timing and kick
  • Turns, push-offs and swimming a full length without stopping
04

Water safety

  • Treading water and staying calm when out of depth
  • Judging distance and knowing when to stop and rest
  • Pool rules, lane etiquette and swimming with others

Coaching approach

How it's coached.

Coaching is guide-first: make the swimmer aware of what needs to change, show a better way to do it, then drill it until it becomes the default.
01

Assess before you teach

The first thing that happens in the water is an honest look at where the swimmer is — comfort, breathing, kick, arm pattern. Everything after that is chosen, not assumed.

02

One correction at a time

Children stop listening when they are given five things to fix. We hold one focus per lesson and let the rest follow.

03

Skills, then distance

Swimming a length with a broken stroke only makes the broken stroke stronger. Distance comes once the pattern is right.

04

Parents know what changed

You should be able to tell what your swimmer worked on and what comes next — not just that they had a nice time in the pool.

Program structure

How a block runs.

Lessons run as monthly blocks — once, twice or three times a week — at the published Newtonbrook times. Consistency is what makes swimming stick.
  1. 01

    Skill assessment

The first session in the water establishes the swimmer's current level and the specific skills to work on.

  2. 02

    Fundamentals block

Water confidence, breathing and body position. This is where nervous swimmers become comfortable swimmers.

  3. 03

    Stroke block

Front crawl and backstroke built properly, then breaststroke introduced once the base holds.

  4. 04

    Progression

Longer distances, turns and endurance — and, for swimmers who want it, a path into Pre-Competitive.
